Over the decade to 2007 employee numbers in health and social work in the broader Lancashire area grew by 10,400 (+14.5%); however there was some contraction over the last two years.

The 80,100 employee jobs provided by the health and social work sector in Lancashire in 2007 were equivalent to 12.9% of employees in all industries. This compares with a national average of 12.1%.

An exceptionally large proportion of the health and social work workforce in the county (over 80%) are female and 44% of employees in the sector work part-time.

Health and social work is a major and complex economic activity in Lancashire. In terms of workforce size it is by far the largest single local employing sector, providing jobs for 80,100 people in 2007. A high proportion of employees are professionally qualified staff, e.g. hospital doctors, general practitioners, nurses and ambulance staff.
