Environment and Sustainability
The environment and sustainability industries play a hugely important role in the national and regional economy. The importance of the land resource and how it is managed has never been greater in terms of sustainable development. The industries within this sector influence the lives of everyone living in the UK today and are contributing to the solutions of worldwide issues: food security, fuel efficiency and climate change (LANTRA Sector Skills Council ‘Environmental Industries’ 2009).
The land-based sector provides employment for 3% of the total English workforce. England has around 155,300 businesses in the environment and land-based sector, the vast majority, 96%, employ fewer than 10 people (LANTRA Skills Assessment 2009)
